Faculty

Several professors in the School of Humanities have been honored with various teaching awards: the Luther L. Gobbel Outstanding Faculty Award, the Billie P. Exum Outstanding Teaching Award, the Sears-Roebuck Award and Who’s Who among America’s Teachers, with some winning these awards multiple times. All humanities faculty are active in their respective fields. Some lead study trips abroad through the Lambuth in London program and three different summer immersion programs: at the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Toledo, Spain, at the University of Guanajuato in Mexico and at the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi. Others write and publish books, articles, essays, reviews and creative works, such as poems. Also, foreign language faculty host Immersion Weekends, intensive 24-hour outings involving students in either Spanish or French experiences of cooking, theatre, songs, movies, games, crafts and dancing.

Humanities faculty also keep abreast of developments in their respective fields by holding memberships and offices in professional organizations, such as the Society of Christian Philosophers, the Tennessee Philosophical Association, the Eudora Welty Society, the National Council of Teachers of English, the Mid-Continent Consortium for International Education, the Tennessee Foreign Language Teachers Association, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, The American Association of Teachers of French, the Modern Language Association and others and by presenting papers at professional conferences.

Besides attending conferences themselves, at times these faculty take students to regional and national conferences. Humanities faculty have also established conferences which are now held annually at Lambuth: specifically, the Lambuth Literary Forum and the West Tennessee Religion and Philosophy Collegium, opportunities to showcase emerging student scholars and writers, from Lambuth and from other area universities, who present their research and original creative work. Throughout the academic year, the School of Humanities sponsors Faculty Forum, a venue for Lambuth faculty from across the university to present their research and/or creative efforts, not only to the university community but also to area residents. In September of 2008, the Department of Modern Languages hosted the West Tennessee Foreign Language Teachers Conference, attended by foreign language professionals from throughout the region. In addition, philosophy and religion faculty organize and host the Cooper Seminar for the Laity, providing an opportunity for all to learn from a leading thinker in religion in a small, close setting. Furthermore, all faculty in the area of religion and philosophy are also ordained ministers with numerous years of pastoral experience and are deeply committed to preparing students for ministry in the church.
